Five Nights in Bangkok and the World’s Your Oyster

Bangkok is a blast. Its pace is frenetic. To get anywhere, you avoid cars like the plague and have to take four modes of public transportation to get anywhere because the traffic is so horrendous (think ferry to train, to speed boat, to tuk tuk). You’re hot and sweaty all the time. With all that said, any negatives are far outweighed by its amazing cuisine, tailored suits that fit like a glove, the biggest market in the world, and fun friends.

Our dear friend David from Nashville met us in Bangkok after we flew in on an overnight flight from the Maldives. Cue music here and picture us running towards one another in slow motion- it was so fun to see a friend again! And as great as Bangkok is, seeing David and catching up and processing the experiences we’ve all had while we’ve been apart has been even better. We’ve missed so many stops on the train that Luna is now sweetly saying, “Everyone stop talking!” at each stop to remind us to look where we are going so that we don’t miss anything, and that’s quite funny. We’ve laughed a lot- being goofy and lounging around, and just being together with part of our community has been wonderful.

Some of our experiences during the week:

Josh and David both went to tailors and got custom suits and jackets made, and they had such fun each day. We ate dinner at the top of a building 61 stories high in the open air. After visiting so many markets, Luna is now saying things like, “Mama, that’s a good price, but I’m not paying that and I think we need to bargain.” We celebrated Halloween by dressing up and sending Luna back and forth to doors of the hotel room- Josh and I pretended to be different people and that was pretty wacky too. Massage is everywhere here and so cheap at only $4-6.00 an hour! Luna was thrilled to go to a silk shop and pick out some silks to play with at home. We met our first lady boy (see photo below) and have visited temples. We’ve all cried because the food has been so spicy, and we’ve been entirely silly. Thailand is so relaxed and fun, and David has brought so much joy with him that we are just having a ball.

Here are some pictures of our crazy adventures!

  1. Just now reading your travel blogs … your writing is beautiful and paints a wonderful picture of the incredible adventures you’ve experienced. Wow! You’ve dipped your toes into so many different cultures and lifestyles.

Glad to see Luna has perfected her dress bargaining skills! I could feel her sadness and disappointment in finding out that a playground in Osaka is a dirt field.

It looks and sounds like you are having a most magical time traveling together. Enjoy the rest of your journey!
